Mossley has a unique character due to being built in a steep valley, and has all the typical features of a Northern industrial town that is rapidly changing due to over development . I suppose you could say i'm trying to preserve it in my own little way.
The name Mossley comes from Moss - meaning 'bog' or 'swamp', and 'Leah'
a clearing in woods. It became world renowned for its cotton mills, (all 48 of them) when the industrial revolution was at it's peak in the 1850's, and was known as 'the town of three Counties' as it sat in the middle of the Lancashire,Cheshire and Yorkshire borders, the latter being removed which still causes controversy today.
There are only a couple of mills left today, Woodend Mill being one of them still with its Chimney in tact. The mill is enjoying a revival now that the artistic community of Tameside has adopted it as their own, and created a working studio environment.
